The Myth of Ortygia

According to Greek mythology, Zeus, the father of the gods, once fell in love with a beautiful nymph named Ortygia. In an attempt to escape him, Ortygia transformed herself into a small quail and flew across the Aegean Sea. Zeus, however, pursued her relentlessly. Exhausted, the little bird fell into the sea and disappeared beneath the waves. At the very spot where she fell, a small piece of land emerged - a fragment of earth that Zeus condemned to remain hidden beneath the sea.

But Poseidon had other plans. With a powerful strike of his trident, he lifted the land from the depths and brought it to the surface. Thus, an island was born: Ortygia. Yet the island’s trials were not over. Unanchored to the seabed, it drifted across the Aegean, tossed by restless waves, until the Titaness Leto chose it as the place to give birth to her divine twins, Artemis and Apollo.

Fleeing the wrath of Hera, Leto sought refuge on the wandering island. As soon as she arrived, mighty pillars rose from the depths of the sea, securing the land in place. Legend has it that Leto herself bound the island with invisible, diamond chains.

From that moment on, Ortygia ceased to wander and was renamed Delos, meaning “the Revealed,” as it emerged from the sea into the light. Delos then became the sacred island and summer home of Apollo, the golden-haired god of light.

How the Myth Inspires the Name of Ortygia Suites

The hotel draws its name from this ancient story. Just like the mythical island offered comfort and shelter to Leto, Ortygia Suites was created as a modern sanctuary - a calm, cocooning space designed to help guests unwind, recharge, and reconnect with themselves.

The owner, Nikos, envisioned a place where travelers could feel protected, inspired, and at peace - a contemporary Ortygia in the heart of Mykonos.

Delos Island

Delos Island, located near Mykonos, is easily accessible by boat and offers visitors the chance to discover one of Greece’s most important UNESCO World Heritage archaeological sites.
